| Thu Oct 30, 2003 Hi Everyone -
I'm playing and conducting Monday night for a staged reading of Dear World with The Musical Theatre Guild at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. This is a new version featuring a new orchestration by Christopher Jahnke (a disciple of William Brohn), and I have had the privilege of working directly with composer Jerry Herman and director Glenn Casale in preparing for this performance. The cast and musicians are world-class, and it promises to be a memorable evening.I'd be delighted if you attend.
Sincerely, John Sawoski
John Sawoski musical directs Jerry Herman's Dear World in Concert Monday Nov. 3 (One Performance Only)
7:30 pm, Monday, November 3, 2003 at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA 91203 Book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee Music & Lyrics by Jerry Herman Based on THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT by Jean Giraudoux While overshadowed by "Hello Dolly!" and "Mame", DEAR WORLD arguably provides us with Jerry Herman’s most lyrical score. And, with its infectious title song, the vital "I Don’t Want to Know" (now a cabaret standard) and a triple counter-point mad tea party scene that would even make Puccini jealous, it is certainly his most thrilling. DEAR WORLD is based on the classic, yet still timely, "The Madwoman of Chaillot" which tells the tale of a wise old woman who saves the earth from greedy oil barons, all the while sheltering a pair of young lovers. It won the 1969 Tony Award for its original star, Angela Lansbury.
