Inevitably and enter-tainingly, LBSO favorite Michael Krajewski added plenty of fun and humor to this evening of Broadway gems.
Note from John Sawoski: This was one of the best concerts I've ever played - with the best orchestra, a huge audience in Long Beach Arena, and live big-screen video of the concert. I was on camera most of the show, as the 9-foot Steinway was front and center. It was a piano-heavy show, including the Overture to West Side Story complete with the Mambo... The singers were all powerhouses. They sang Glitter and Be Gay, lots of great Jule Styne, Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as songs from "Wicked" and "Mamma Mia." It all ended with an encore of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" which featured big piano solos. Michael Krajewski also had a great rapport with the audience as well as the singers (and the orchestra).

Unfortunately, Carlo Spiga, The Capistrano Valley Symphony’s musical director, passed away Saturday night, Sept. 22, 2007, and the orchestra got the news between the rehearsal and the concert Sunday. As Sawoski said later, "Despite the shocking and sad news we received about Carlo’s passing, we knew he'd want the orchestra to have a good show anyway, so we did. Sunday night's guest artists were The Riders of the Purple Sage, six really great singing Western (not country) musicians who could orchestrate, play complex rhythms, and much more. We did lots of fun songs, including a number called "Picked Suite," which was sort of a bluegrass concerto grosso that involved our players reading some intense fiddling licks, alternating with the band. And their mandolinist did an amazing solo version of the William Tell Overture Finale." The orchestra also performed Sawoski's Morricone medley arrangement, "Spaghetti Western/Romance Medley." John Sawoski Remotely Triggers Piano While Musical Directing I Remember You
John Sawoski's musical direction of Bill Hayes, Lee Meriwether, and Caryn Richman, and piano-playing for the play I Remember You at Norris Center for the Performing Arts in Rolling Hills Estates, CA in May 2005, was "well realized by musical director John Sawoski's offstage playing" (Los Angeles Times). An acoustic piano on stage, actually triggered remotely (with the PianoDisc system, from an offstage MIDI keyboard) by John Sawoski, appeared to be played by Bill Hayes, convincingly enough to make the Palos Verdes Peninsula News state that "a charming Bill Hayes portrays the piano player with conviction, and to some patrons' surprise, he even plays his own piano, with musical director John Sawoski filling in seamlessly behind a scrim." After that review appeared, Bill Hayes began making a nightly curtain call speech asking how the audience enjoyed his playing, and subsequently confessing that he didn't play a single note. Audiences also enjoyed John Sawoski's moving arrangement of "The Water Is Wide," sung by the cast in the final scene nightly. A grand piano and the PianoDisc system were graciously provided by Kawai.
