OUR BROADWAY / THE HOLIDAYS
Queen Creek Performing Arts Center
December, 2005
v/o announcer says:
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PLEASE WELCOME… THE LEADING LADIES!
SOMETHING’S COMING/I CAN SEE IT (trio)
LEADING LADY 1
Thank you and good evening/afternoon! My name is LEADING LADY 1.
LEADING LADY 2
I’m LEADING LADY 2.
LEADING LADY 3
And I’m LEADING LADY 3. Together we’re the Leading Ladies. Now, you may know that we all have one special role in common.
(John plays scary intro chords to “Phantom”. All look at him.)
LEADING LADY 1
Yes, thank you, John. Everyone, this is our music director, John Sawoski. We’ll get to THAT just a little bit later. Now we all know that there are certain groups of women who traditionally do NOT get along.
LEADING LADY 2
Beauty pageant contestants.
LEADING LADY 3
Mothers of cheerleaders.
LEADING LADY 1
And Leading Ladies. Have you ever been outside an audition studio with nine women who were auditioning for the same part? (oooh)
LEADING LADY 2
But, we are here tonight/today to dispel that myth!
LEADING LADY 3
Yes, you see before you three women with practically the same resume, and we’re friends.
LEADING LADY 1
We are.
LEADING LADY 2
Really! And now we get to sing together and we love it. Here are some great songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
IT’S A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING (trio)
IF I LOVED Y OU (LEADING LADY 1)
TEN MINUTES AGO(LEADING LADY 2)
THE SWEETEST SOUNDS (LEADING LADY 3)
THE LONELY GOATHERD (trio)
LEADING LADY 3
This next number is one of our favorite songs to sing, from a little-known musical called THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE.
SING FOR YOUR SUPPER (trio)
LEADING LADY 3
You know, sometimes it seems to us like all the great songs in musicals are given to men.
LEADING LADY 1
Oh, how true. It happens all the time! For instance, in that certain show we talked about before, we’ve all heard that “The Music of the Night” was originally written for Christine. Hmmm… somehow, it got given to Michael Crawford.
LEADING LADY 2
And you know what WE got to do in that number? Well, we got to do a lot of this:
(Everyone stands looking straight forward)
LEADING LADY 3
A little of this:
(Everyone closes their eyes and tilts their head sideways)
LEADING LADY 1
And at the end, we got to fall on the floor!
LEADING LADY 3
Well, we’re getting our revenge here tonight. Because it’s OUR show, we can sing anything we want to – even songs typically sung by MEN.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A DAME (trio)
IF EVER I WOULD LEAVE YOU (LEADING LADY 1)
HEY THERE (LEADING LADY 3)
IMPOSSIBLE DREAM (LEADING LADY 2)
LEADING LADY 2
Now that I have you all to myself… There’s something I’d like to tell you… Of the three of us, I’m the only one that’s a mom. I have a daughter – Maddy. Maddy Claire Parks, that’s her name. She’s nine now and she’s beautiful, she’s smart … she’s very musical – in fact, she’s got this CD she just won’t stop listening to – I have one right over here on the piano – John, can you hand me that? What IS the name of it again….? Oh, YES! It’s called THE LEADING LADIES. (pause) I told you she was smart. We do have some more of these, and they’ll be available at intermission and after the concert in the lobby… We’ll be there, autographing them if you want… They make great gifts…
LEADING LADY 1 & LEADING LADY 3 enter L, both carrying mic stands, which they leave Down Stage Left
LEADING LADY 1
Uh, LEADING LADY 2…
LEADING LADY 3
We thought you were going to introduce the next song.
LEADING LADY 2
Oh, I was just getting to that. _____________ on bass, everyone.
(bass begins playing)
LEADING LADY 2 (con’t)
This song has been sung to Maddy at bedtime every night since she was a baby. After nine years, it’s harder to get the girls to come over every night…
MOONSHINE LULLABY (trio)
LEADING LADY 1
We have a question: What would a 3-girl act be without a little Andrews Sisters?
BEI MIR BIST DU SCHÖN (trio)
(LEADING LADY 1 & LEADING LADY 2 take mic stands off, LEADING LADY 3 starts singing)
MEMORY (trio)
LEADING LADY 1
Now before we get to the end of this act, we want to remind you of a couple of things: Make sure and get back to your seats in time, because the 2nd act opens with a huge treat for you – your own Dance Connection Too dancers. We’ve been watching them rehearse, and they are fantastic!
LEADING LADY 3
Make sure and warm up your voices – there’s going to be a sing along in the 2nd act, and we expect great things from you!
LEADING LADY 2
Oh, and make sure and stock up on the Leading Ladies CDs – did we mention they make great gifts? Okay,“The Phantom of the Opera”. Each one of us has had the pleasure of playing the role of Christine on Broadway and all over the country – even in Canada. If you’ve seen the show in any of those places, you’ve probably seen one of us.
LEADING LADY 1
Combined, I think we’ve played the role more than 4,000 times! And we’ve played opposite 32 different Phantoms.
LEADING LADY 3
That's right. Now, I know girls don’t like to count, but that means we’ve played the role for 19 years. It’s like the Hotel California.
LEADING LADY 1
You can check out anytime you like.
ALL
But you can never leave!
LEADING LADY 1
It’s a role that’s meant a lot to us over the years, so we’d like to give you a little bit of “Phantom”. Then we'll see you after the intermission.
PHANTOM MEDLEY:
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (trio)
WISHING YOU WERE SOMEHOW HERE AGAIN (LEADING LADY 2)
ALL I ASK OF YOU (LEADING LADY 3)
THINK OF ME (LEADING LADY 1 and trio ending)
ACT II
(At end, John and the Band enter while dancers exit)
SLEIGH RIDE (trio) (starts off-stage, and enter stage midway)
LEADING LADY 1
Hi, we’re back! And as you can see, we’re in the holiday spirit. How about you?
LEADING LADY 3
Now there are a few great things about being the Leading Ladies. For one thing, we get to wear fabulous gowns. What do you think of these? (all model)
LEADING LADY 2
Hey, we're not here to talk about our dresses… Let’s sing.
LEADING LADY 2
This song is from a show called "Meet Me in St. Louis". My mother-in-law, Betty Garrett, and I did it on Broadway. She wasn't my mother-in-law then, but about a year later she was when I married my husband, Garrett. And then we had Maddy, my wonderful daughter…
HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS (LEADING LADY 2)
SANTA BABY (trio)
HARD CANDY CHRISTMAS (trio)
LEADING LADY 1
We feel really lucky to have found our musical director, John Sawoski. He’s a fabulous pianist and his arrangements are so wonderful!
LEADING LADY 2
You know, several of those arrangements are featured on our CD…
LEADING LADY 3 (interrupting)
We begged him and __________ and ___________ to play this next number, just for us. You can listen, too.
PEANUT’S MEDLEY (John and the Band)
SOME CHILDREN SEE HIM (LEADING LADY 3)
LEADING LADY 3
This next section runs the gamut of holiday music – a sacred piece from an Old English text, a contemporary song celebrating Hanukkah, and a classic favorite we’re sure you’ll all recognize.
BALULALOW (trio)
THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS (trio)
O HOLY NIGHT (LEADING LADY 1)
CAROL OF THE BELLS (trio)
LEADING LADY 1
Okay, the time has come! What would the holidays be without a sing-along? You’ve all got the words. OK, now look down on the floor for that piece of paper you came in with tonight/today.
LEADING LADY 2
And we’re going to bring back our dancers to help us on this. Come on out – could we have the house lights up…?
DECK THE HALL
LEADING LADY 3
Before we say goodnight, we’d like to thank our band - ________ on drums, _________ on bass, and of course, the fabulous John Sawoski on piano.
LEADING LADY 1
Thank you Joan Simmons, Molly Jacobs, and everybody here at the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center for taking such good care of us. And thank you to the wonderful Dance Connection Too for joining in the festivities.
LEADING LADY 2
We'll see you out in the lobby, to sign your CDs if you want, but more importantly to meet you all and thank you for coming. We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!
I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS (trio)
Goodnight/Goodbye! (wave and exit)
